Wendy Davis Paintings

Artist Statement:

I have a creative soul and am inspired by everything around me. I see inspiration everywhere, and often think “THAT would be an amazing painting”! Largely self-taught, I spent 30 years as a graphic designer, then finally transitioned into full-time oil painting seven years ago. I paint in oils, in both direct and indirect methods. In my portrait / figurative work leans toward narrative works that imply a story that is left up to the viewer to contemplate. I am also drawn to loose landscapes and plein air opportunities, painting those in direct method, using larger brushes for the majority of the painting, to keep the feeling loose and energetic. I paint in a contemporary style. I try to keep my portraits loose with expressive brush strokes, pushing color and editing composition to enhance each piece. I like to keep transparency in paint layers to promote luminosity. My studio work includes digitally composing and editing images, sometimes shifting colors, or building a subject out of multiple images to come up with a final composition to work from. I also cut and finish most of the panels I paint on, as well as manufacture hand-crafted wood float frames. Using these consistent frames helps to keep my work looking cohesive, when subject matter fluctuates.
