CHRISTINE WICHERS

ARTIST STATEMENT

My journey to create art started early in life as I experienced the beauty of nature all around me. My grandmother took me along with her beach combing and showed me how to create collages with shells, driftwood and seaweed. She also included me in her ceramics class when I was quite young. Later, art classes at the University of Las Vegas grounded me with the basics of drawing, painting and throwing pots on a wheel. Learning to fly fish, I discovered art of another kind that led to the "Zen" of gurgling streams, glistening trout, and glowing mountain sunsets. After retiring, I launched myself into art in a big way taking oil painting lessons. I find the process of creating a painting a viscerally pleasurable experience - the consistency of the paint as it mixes together and flows from the brush to the canvas is exciting and often surprising. Seeing a painting come to life from a drawing or one of my own photographs is magical. I am currently accepting commissions for original oil paintings and pet portraits. I am a member of Society of Washington Artists.
